Today I went to my general practitioner, Dr. Fred Salley at scripps Encinitas to get my shots for our surf trip to the Mentawais in Indonesia. Dr. Salley, on top of being the best doctor I have ever had, has traveled the globe surfing, and even spent substantial time in El Salvador in the seventies back when they were filming Big Wednesday there with Gerry Lopez and co. Dr. Salley knows what’s up with pretty much everything surf and health related and he got me dialed in for the trip and even helped me clarify my feelings about malaria medication.

This is what I got while I was there:

• Tetanus, Diptheria, Pertussis Vaccination
• Hepatitis A Vaccine
• Measles Mumps and Rubella Vaccine
• Typhoid Fever Vaccine

He also prescribed me a few items as well

• Malarone – (Newer malaria medication with very few and very minor side effects) He said he has never had problems with it and I need to start taking it two days prior to my departure.
• Cipro – A broad spectrum antibiotic that should cure me of any mysterious ailments or diarrhea
• Ambien / Lunesta – to help me sleep on the plane ride there.

Driving on PCH

1. Cyclists – GOD I hate the Cyclists, you want to be treated like a car and take up the whole road but you can’t go the speed limit, or use the bike lane and you don’t want to come to a stop for traffic lights and stop signs. One of these days I am going to get a super soaker fill it will my piss and wait on PCH and just hose your fucking spandex clad asses.

Everyone needs to call Jeff at 949-493-5231 and he’ll hook up the medical/travel insurance for cheap. $60. This is required for our trip.

It is also recommended that we get our shots for hepatitis and tetanus current prior to the trip.

Malaria: Meds are optional; however, most surfers who frequent the resort do not take malaria meds but do take repellent and apply at dusk!

Remember to bring some long sleeve shirts and linen pants (ford has plenty if you don’t have any).

I don’t need to elaborate too much on the fatal Great White attack today in Solana Beach, I am sure you all have heard about it or have read the news. If not, these are the two best articles I have seen about the incident.

On a related note, Blakes and I were in the water this morning at Blacks well before 7am scoring chest to head high waves with a very limited crowd factor. It was probably the best conditions I have had in a month or so, and we both surfed great sessions. I am looking forward to surfing there again tomorrow.
Blacks Beach, for those of you don’t know, is about 3 miles from the shark attack location and sits on top of one of the deepest underwater trenches in the east pacific. The waves are good at blacks due to the underwater canyon there. It is well known within the surf and shark communities that Great White Sharks breed in the deep waters off of Blacks Beach. Furthermore, It should be noted that the last fatal shark attack ON A SURFER was in 1959 in La Jolla just to the south of blacks.

An 8-foot alligator made its way into a kitchen in an Eastlake-Woodlands area home Monday night.

PINELLAS COUNTY (Bay News 9) — An Oldsmar woman had an interesting, although uninvited guest in her home Monday night.

Sandra Frosti heard a noise coming from the kitchen of her home on Evelyn Court in the Eastlake-Woodlands area.

“I heard a noise from the kitchen and it was much too loud to be my cat,” Frosti said. “So I went to check it out.”

When she went to investigate, she found an 8-foot alligator – in her kitchen.

“Much to my surprise a very large alligator was in my kitchen,” Frosti said.

Frosti hid in the bedroom and called 911. Her call to 911 even had the dispatcher in disbelief.

Dispatcher: What’s going on?

Frosti: There’s an alligator in my kitchen.

Dispatcher: Are you sure it couldn’t be like an Iguana?

Frosti: Oh-no, no, no, no, no.

The gator hisses as the trapper lures it out of the kitchen.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the gator pushed his way in through a screen door and managed to get in through an open sliding glass door.

The reptile then began walking around Frosti’s home, maneuvering through the living room, down a hall and into the kitchen.

No one was injured and a trapper hauled the gator away.

The trapper said because of its size the gator will most likely be killed. Spring time is mating season for gators and a time people usually see them in odd places, according to the trapper.

“He looked awfully well fed,” Frosti said. “The police seem to think he was checking out my cat.”
