Summer and I are kicking it in the Puerto Rican heat thinking about the new baby on the way and how nice its going to be when we can start globe trotting again. There are some local spots that I want to check out on the other islands in the Caribbean and in the Bahamas.
I was just reading about James Point Bahamas and it looks pretty cool. The Bahamas block out the majority of the swell heading towards Miami and I have heard some great surf stories from sailors and fisherman that just so happen to be in an area when a swell starts breaking on an outer reef or in a cove.
James Point is on the island of Eleuthera and has pretty consistent surf that takes North, NorthEast, South and SouthEast swell directions. It is a punchy wave that lines up down the reef up to 300 meters! Reef and sand covered reef and mucho urchins along with a few sharks will be waiting for you in the line-up. It works best on a low to medium tide and starts breaking at 3 feet. It is off the beaten path and 4WD access is needed to get close to the break but apparently the option of walking the last mile or so is doable too…just don’t forget water and food.
Eleuthera looks sick. From what I’ve read, it is nothing like the cruise ship ports of Nassau and Freeport, it is quiet with pristine pink sand beaches. Local fish (bring your spear) areNassau Grouper and red snapper. Crawfish are a local favorite, but I’d rather pay for them then try to catch ‘em and prepare them.
I don’t know all the logistics of getting to Eleuthera, but I think you can fly directly from Nassau, Miami and Ft. Lauderdale via Continental. I would like to rent a 4WD car on Eleuthera to make sure we aren’t limited in our surf exploration. I’m guessing that’s gonna run $80 a day. There are probably plenty of spots around the island to explore and even if James Point is the only one, I want to drive up to the break. Did I mention it is a heavy wave?
It sounds like a new born friendly surf trip to me so Summer, the baby and I are going to get this done. Our two years without surf trips is coming to an end. Conner is close enough to join but the rest of you donkeys on the West Coast may have a harder time making this adventure happen. Who’s up for a 5 day adventure exploring Eleuthera and James Point mid November?
